Simplify Music 2.0 Does What iTunes and iPhone Should Do Natively
April 30th, 2009 by admin
Around when I first got my iPhone, I used to use to really wow anyone who cared to listen to me gloat about my new toy. The app, if you’ve never heard of it, allows you to stream your home iTunes library from any computer with the desktop client installed directly to your iPhone. You can browse your library and change tracks, all remotely. Very handy if you have a 40GB library, but only 8 to 16GB of storage on your iPhone.
I stopped using it shortly after, because I missed a lot of the features from the iPhone’s built-in iPod app, especially playlists. is a completely different app, and while the new features probably could’ve been introduced via an update to Simplify Media (which many downloaded as a free release when it originally came out), they are significant enough to justify the $3 (on sale, $6 starting May 14) purchase price.

HelloGoodbye
April 30th, 2009 by admin
I finished An Illustrated Life.
Butterflies are starting to come out, they’re everywhere.
I skipped school today. I ache everywhere, I’m stressed.
I’m going to paint some stuff for the library display during the summer, but I don’t know what yet. Maybe monsters…
Tonight I’m going to be a nerd and see the Death Note movie ’L: Change the World’ with Rain, Morgan, and Sean.
Hurrah.

Online Educatin’
April 30th, 2009 by admin
While at work today at I realized I was late for class. I am a student in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Masters of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) LEEP program. LEEP indicates that I attend classes online. So being late for class means I rushed home, turn on the computer, login to the program’s Moodle page, and there we are; all 20 of us, connected via text chat with a live audio feed from the professor. We mostly participate via chat and the occasional telephone call when I’m required to provide a presentation. Did anyone realize I was late?

Top Ten Librarian Retronyms
April 30th, 2009 by admin
is silly, and possibly very old, but I still found it amusing. Should I be embarrassed to admit this is the first time I’ve heard the word ““? In my defense, Wikipedia claims that “retronym” is a neologism, and it’s no secret that I’m a bit of an English-language traditionalist.
10. Shelf pointer librarian
9. Analog librarian
8. Legacy librarian
7. Librarian unplugged
6. 3×5 librarian
5. Internot librarian
4. Retrobrarian
3. (Insert the name of your supervisor here) librarian
2. Wallenda librarian (flying high without the net)
1. Librarian 1.0
I’m particularly fond of the term “analog librarian”. It makes me nostalgic for the career I never had… musty books, catalog cards written by hand, a time when library school was more about practicing “” and buying reference books, and not about . Don’t worry, though. I’m not laboring under any misconceptions here; I’m well aware that most of my value as a librarian is tied up in tech skills. Now, please excuse me while I try to figure out what’s wrong with our IP authentication for databases…

Plymouth Library
April 30th, 2009 by admin

The Plymouth Central Library is situated in Tavistock Road, opposite the University of Plymouth. It was opened in 1910 in a dual ceremony with the City of Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery.
The final cost of the work is said to have been £15,627 14s 6d for the Library.
Then on the night of April 22nd/23rd 1941 the building and some 72,000 volumes were lost, including 41,000 in the lending library, 16,000 in the reference department and the Devon and Cornwall Collection of 15,000 books. Luckily there were 5,000 books out on loan, which were largely saved. Some of the stock was salvaged but it was only thanks to the general public donating 4,500 books that a library service was able to recommence as quickly as it did.
The Plymouth Proprietary Library, now situated at the top of North Hill, is the oldest library in the City. It was founded at a meeting held on Wednesday November 20th 1811.
On the evening of Monday July 16th 1962 the Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth, Admiral Sir Charles Madden, officially presented 15,000 naval books from the Port Library and Plymouth Command Officers’ Library to the City to form the Naval Studies section of the Plymouth Library Service. It was to be known as “The Mount Wise Collection”.

Library Epiphany
April 30th, 2009 by admin
Had a library epiphany today, thanks to Jenn and Marlene. The reason I’m meant to work with teens (and maybe someday, adults) rather than children is, if they crap their pants it’s not my responsibility. I can politely ask them to take care of it. And their mothers don’t sniff their butts.

We Set a Date!
April 30th, 2009 by admin
I'll be interviewed here
The Morning Edition news program has an opening in their schedule on May 7th. Although they could have chosen to feature the grandmother who fended off burglars with her cane or the cheerleading squad who came in second in the state competition, they chose me instead! Sorry cheerleaders, maybe next week.
I’m not sure when the interview will air, but I will definitely request a copy and let you all see me in action. Usually they sit in director’s chairs, I wonder if they’ll let me sit on the toilet instead?
At this point, I have signings firmed up for June 7th at and another tentatively set for May 24th at the to promote my book and to benefit the . That date is subject to change since it’s Memorial Day weekend.
